Powerhouse Journey : The Monte de Piedad And Savings Bank

Monte de Piedad And Savings Bank Building

| Sign Post : Accoring to the History "The capitalization of Monte de Piedad came from the so-called "Obras Pias", funds of the Archdiocese of Manila that were used to finance the galleon trade and its charitable works. After the trade had ended, these funds were as capital for the first Philippine banks, including the Banco Espanol-Filipino in 1851 and Monte de Piedad in 1882. It was said that a Spanish Franciscan friar Felix Huertas was the prime mover in convincing the Archbishop of Manila and the Governor-General to establish a bank especially for the poor."

| Sign Post : The name “Monte De Piedad” means “Mountain of Mercy”.

The Historical Marker

|  Sign Post : Monte de Piedad was originally located inside the Intramuros when it was first inaugurated on August 2, 1882.

Accoring to Wikipedia "During the 1990s, the bank was rehabilitated by Singapore’s Keppel Group, and then changed its name to Keppel Bank. At present, as part of a broader strategy of stepping up its deals in fast-growing markets in Asia, the bank was finally acquired by General Electric Co."

| Interesting facts : Ang dating Pangulong Manuel Quezon ay nagtrabaho dito bilang isang clerk noong 1900’s.
