Hot Spot : Zernan "Ken" Mataya
Sabi nga nila lahat ng bagay lumilipas at nagbabago ngunit ang larawan ay andiyan lamang at siya ang magiging saksi sa nakaraan, isa sa mga mahuhusay kumuha ng mga larawan at isang rin kaibigan mula sa Heritage Group na si Zernan Mataya o mas kilala bilang Ken sa kanyang mga kaibigan. Siya ngayon ang aking photographer of the month kung saan ipapakita niya ang kanyang galing mula sa pagkuha ng mga landscape at iba pa.

Genre of your Photography: I started in Landscape but my interest is into something surreal and photo arts.
Tell me about yourself that people don't know: I always broadcast who I am and what I do and my interests are so wide. As an artist I'm into photography, acting (indie films), singing, yes I used to sing and perform now I just sing in the mass . I'm also into heritage conservation, mapping and documenting heritage sites. I'm also into paranormal investigations, a mountaineer, animal lover and the least that people know about me is I am a masseur.
What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
I just woke up and had my morning prayer, very calm and relax
How did you get started in photography? I have always been interested in photography but only get serious about it when I got a DSLR, that was 2010.
Did you go to school to study photography?
No
What camera did you use?
I'm using Pentax KX and Sonny a6000
How would you characterize the style of your photography? I'm still developing my style but I'm leading to surrealism.
Can you share with us some recent images?
My Pico de Loro climb is my last travel photo and my the last photo art that I did is a request from a Paranormal group to create something esoteric for their page group will also send you a copy.
And what's the story behind it?
I Just told the story. A Paranormal group asked a picture that they can use for their cover page, something esoteric. What I did is capture into photography and art the moment when I do Tower of Light Meditation.
Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?
My friends in FB who keep on posting beautiful pictures and my friends who want their pictures taken by me.
How did you become a photographer? And When did your career start as a professional photographer?
It started as a hobby. As a pro I'm still starting. I'm a free lancer since I have other things to do. My career started when people message me how much will I charge to take pictures of them or to cover some events to take pictures of their work. I usually decline because it was just a hobby to me until I ran out of reason not to give in to their requests. A friend also shared my pictures of old houses in Sariaya and an Interior designer got interested to hire me to take photos of his projects.
How did you go about selling your first photograph?
A magazine, Real Living, contacted me if they can use my pictures in one of their issues.
What makes a good photographer in your opinion?
Someone who does not stop to learn and improve.
Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you?
Not particular yet with lenses since I started only with my kit lens.
What is the most rewarding part of photography?
The recognition I guess and when people gives confirmation that they like my work.
What is your most embarrassing experience as a photographer?
Non so far.
How photography change your life? Not much. I think the change happens in my budget because I need to invest now in buying more gadgets that I need in my photography. I am planning to have a studio in my pad.
I know you been working with some of the famous and influential people in the country but may I ask whom do you wish/dream to work with and Why?
I have not worked yet with those people and I have nothing particular in mind but I wish to shoot a supermodel to be part of some works that I am brewing this time. I am now trying to collaborate with some good artists to come up with themed photographs or make a versions of their artworks in photography.
Just enjoy and shoot beautiful pictures. Don't stop learning. If your pictures are good money will come.

What is your favourite recent image you have shot recently? Can you describe it’s creation in regards to location, lighting, composition, camera settings etc, also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?
It is a panoramic shoot of Pico de Loro.
What are the pros and cons of being a photographer? Please be specific.
Pros: first is recognition, second I find it easy to make new friends, like when I travel friends and newly found friends want to stick with me because they know that my pictures are good for their social media selfies and posts.
Cons: I always need a backpack and bring bulky gadgets even when I am climbing. My camera has to be with me wherever I go. It's hard to pack light.
I love the mountains so it's the best place for me.
What goal are you working towards within your photography and when will you know you have reached it? I plan to join international competitions though I have already joined some online contests and won awards I am still eyeing for some more prestigious ones. I am still on the process of looking for those competitions. I am also collaborating with some artists to come up with some series. Once I have an award and had those series done that
What photographic organizations do you belong to?
I'm a member of Pikon (Pinoy Nikon Canon Pentax Sony Soooters) and a number of travel and photography enthusiasts in facebook like Funtastic Philippines.
Name a photographer you would like to take a portrait of?
None in particular for now.
If you weren't a photographer or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
An Architect, it was a childhood dream and I have fascinations to beautiful structures and houses. It did not become a reality because we had no money then to pursue the course.
How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
I think still doing the same, taking beautiful shots and sharing my knowledge to younger generation.
