Ibang klase ang galing niya dun kaya di ako nagtataka kung paano niya narating ang kanyang kinaroonan ngaun!

Tara kilala pa natin si Kelvin Dhel Ocampo sa aking munting interview!

Full Name and Alias: Kelvin Dhel Ocampo (Dhel)

Location: Manila
Age: 21

Genre of your graphic illustration: Doodle Art

Tell me something about yourself that people don't know:
I'm Dhel, Currently a Graphic Artist at Global Alliance for Rabies Control and sidelining as freelance project manager for Maven, a multimedia team. We created a small team of talented individuals, tasked on different projects involving video production, 3D and 2D animation, photography and web&mobile applications. What people don't know about me is that I am addicted to TV Series. I often adjust my schedule just to have time to watch an episode. My Favorite Series includes Revolution, Under the Dome, Game of Thrones and Walking Dead (Hehe, Mostly Post-Apocalyptic type of series)

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
Currently I'm stuffed with work that I need to finish for the day. But nah, 10 minutes for this won't break the sched.

When and how did you get your start in the industry?
I started as a blogger and a doodle artist at my own blog which was named before as dhel.tumblr.com, after that I got exposed to different clients and offered me commissions on my designs, the next thing is that I'm hitting a huge break in a company wherein I get a job that I want, Until more projects came and I have to extend my resources so I created and manage a team.

Did you go to school to study this genre?
Yes and No. Basically Information Technology is a course wherein a broad knowledge about computers and digitalization is discussed. I learned my fundamentals in Web/Mobile Design and Development there, I also learned my fundamentals in Graphics Design there. And as a Student Leader, I had distributed those things that I learned inside and outside school by founding a Student Organization, namely Information Technology Students' Organization.

How did you discover your passion for art? Was it always something you knew you wanted to do?
I never did like art when I was little. I scribble a lot when I was in highschool, but that's just a thing for normal teenagers (wow, now I really feel old.) And I started on doodle art when I was actually blogging. When my friends saw my first doodle and convinced me to continue to do it. I learned my craft and I developed it. Until other things related to doodle art came to me like magic. That art had been a sudden interest now.

The Art Works of Kelvin Dhel Ocampo

How do you define graphic design?
Graphic Design for me, is a work of art that contradicts art. Kinda confusing? Yeah. Because for me. Graphic Design is an art that you do to make people understand what you want to say (unlike in art wherein you get to involve your audience in creating a feel on your work, or letting them have their own interpretation on your work).

How did you find your style? Has it changed since you started?
I found my style when I was doing my personal projects, seeing patterns and other things that I think originated from what I imagined. It started from patterns of swirls until it became a thing for me to create a patter of leaves until it became a thing for me to create abstract shapes for my artworks.

What was your first ever illustration of, do you still have it, if not where is it?
Yes. Still on my blog. My first ever doodle.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?
Internet, Network of Friends and from watching movies.

How did illustration/graphic design change your life?
It changed my life for it opens me to a new world. Wherein I get to express myself the way I wanted it to. Under my grounds and under my limits. It also changed my life for it offers me tons of opportunities. Opportunities that I didn't expect. Until now, even if I am on hiatus with my blog, I still has that connections that I created 2 to 3 years prior to what I am today.

What are the pros and cons of being a graphic illustrator?
Pros. I get to do what I love to do. Cons. I get to be scolded at times when I follow my own rules. Specially if I'm under a project and our concepts collide.

If you weren't a graphic artist/illustrator or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
I'm into the I.T. Field, Doing programs or websites for my company. Or be sitting on a 9-6 shift under network and server administration. Which also one of the things that I love to do.

What legacy will you leave?
A legacy for me is something that reminds people that I had left them something. At this point in time, I think I already left a legacy within my college. And that was to fight for the student's right as a Student Leader and President of the I.T. Students (Back in 2012). The legacy of telling students that what you do is not wrong and should not be subjected under a certain ground wherein fairness is not given. In terms of legacy on my design. I dunno, I guess being one of those people who created a trend on doodles?

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
Still under a Multimedia Field, already had my doctoral degree in Advertising. And a Professor at a University.

Your #1 art tip or words of wisdom.
Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.

Any final message? Its your time to shine..
Besides for my tip or words of wisdom. I would just like to impart to the youth and the minds of adults that ideas are as golden as your values. Treasure your ideas. It serves as a spark for people who are eager to create things for the future.
