Hot Spot : Rennell Salumbre

#RedefinePogi Photo by Karlo Torio

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
Puzzled...Questioning myself on what to do with my life.

How did you get started in photography?
Prior to photography, I am into guitars but I felt I was not improving and I needed a new hobby.

UST, 2014.

Did you go to school to study photography?
No. But I joined some seminars/workshops. If you are starting out with photography, I highly recommend joining Mr. Jo Avila’s workshop on Basic Photography. If you want to take your photography to the next level, if you are into landscapes, join the Chasing Light Workshop by Mr. Edwin Martinez and Mr. Jay Jallorina. If you are into music, join Ms. Nina Sandejas’ workshop.

What camera did you use?
I used to own a Nikon D90 then shifted to Canon. Currently using a Canon 7D.

How would you characterize the style of your photography?
Straight to the point and “walang basagan nang trip”.

Can you share with us some recent images?

And what's the story behind it?
They are part of my growing collection of landscape photos.

Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?
There are too many to mention when it comes to who influenced me but special mention to my mentors, Jo Avila, Edwin Martinez, Jay Jallorina, Paul Yan and Nina Sandejas.

How did you go about selling your first photograph?
When a friend asked me to cover her friend’s debut.Ugh…never again.

What makes a good photographer in your opinion?
A good photographer properly knows how to execute a shot but a great photographer knows how to print his shots.

Do You Have A Favorite Walk Around Lens...If So What Is It?
Any ultra-wide angle lenses.

Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you?
Tripod, filters and intervalo meter.

What is the most rewarding part of photography?
When I see my shots printed.

What is your most embarrassing experience as a photographer?
When I had this notion that my shots were already good enough but really, they are not.

How photography change your life?
And I quote this from my friend, Mr. Jay Penaflorida, not exact but it’s like this, “Paano gaganda kuha mo kung hindi pangit ang tingin mo sa mundo?”

I know you been working with some of the famous and influential people in the country but may I ask whom do you wish/dream to work with and
Joey Lawrence or Joe McNally.

What tips can you give to someone aspiring to be a professional photographer?
I am no pro but my tip is to keep shooting and be open to any criticisms that will be made to you and to your photos. Also, print your shots.

What are the best tools for a beginner to learn on (besides the camera)?
Learn how to use Photoshop and Lightroom.

What is your favourite recent image you have shot recently? Can you describe it’s creation in regards to location, lighting, composition, camera settings etc, also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you? How recent?

If from the past 6 months, the most recent would be my Boracay Milky Way shot. Nothing fancy about the composition but what makes it special is that I waited for more than 4 hours just to have a decent shot of the Milky Way. It is all about waiting and trying.

What are the pros and cons of being a photographer? Please be specific.
I cannot think of any. Perhaps Google might be of help. :D

I know you like traveling for shoot or even for chill-out, can tell me where is the best place to be to do some shoot? and why there?
Best place I have shot so far is Nagsasa, Zambales. That place is beautiful. I have seen shots of Batanes and it is photogenic, I cannot wait to get there.

What goal are you working towards within your photography and when will you know you have reached it?
My goal is to have my pictures exhibited and and yeah, sell.

I wish to be relevant.
What photographic organizations do you belong to?
I’m part of the Chasing Light Alumni family.

Name a photographer you would like to take a portrait of?
Me. #selfie

If you weren't a photographer or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
Being a photographer is just a hobby of mine. I always wanted to become a lawyer.

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
A lawyer and a public servant.

What legacy you will leave on?
Since I want to become a public servant, I want to be revolutionary. I want to help our country progress.

Any final message? It’s your time to shine…
Walang basagan nang trip.

Muli maraming salamat kay Chief Rennell Salumbre sa pagpapaunlak ng HotSpot session na ito.
