You Turn: Juan Miguel B. Pagulayan

Tell me something about yourself that people don't know:
My name is J.M. Pagulayan. Please just call me J.M. I really don't like hearing my whole name. Haha! Anyway, I'm a graphic artist and I like doing Vector illustrations. I also like to dance and sing but not professionally, of course. Don't expect me to be very good at it. Haha!

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
I just finished doing my "War Machine" vector and I need a break.

When and how did you get your start in the industry?
I haven't really made a name for myself yet but if you must know, I really like doing Vector illustrations. I started as a graphic artist in a company that owns some franchises of fastfood restaurants such as Jollibee, Greenwich, Red Ribbon and Chowking. I was the only artist there so I was in charge of all graphic related materials. Now, I'm a project based graphic artist at LiFEDATA Systems Inc., wherein my colleagues and I make user interfaces of apps, websites and the like. I'm also a freelance artist at an event company.

Did you go to school to study this genre?

Yup! I'm an MMA student at De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde. I learned a lot about graphic design and how important it is to the corporate world.

How did you discover your passion for art?
Was it always something you knew you wanted to do? When I was in highschool, I was really into web development but when I got to college and learned how, it was really hard. Passion for art? I think it started when I was a kid, I watched lots of cartoons and read lots of comic books. I tried doing free hand drawing but I was never realy good at it. It was a good thing that photoshop and illustrator was invented. Thank God for technology, right? Haha!

How do you define graphic design?

Expressing emotions through art.

How did you find your style? Has it changed since you started?
When I was at the office, I was searching for some Star Wars artworks. Then I said to myself, "Hey, why not try vector illustration?" So I tried and I was successful. It was hard but very rewarding. I'm glad that I finished it and some of my friends liked it so, I made more.

What was your first ever illustration of, do you still have it, if not where is it?
I remember doing a comic book when I was in gradeschool. I don't remember where it is now.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?
The internet, of course.

How did illustration/graphic design change your life?
Being an artist made me realize one thing: the world will always look down on you and it's up to you if you'd choose to accept it or fight for it.

What are the pros and cons of being a graphic illustrator?
Well, you can keep doing what you want. Make artworks using your own style, create awesome illustrations using your own concepts. The sad thing is, the company that you would be working for won't like or understand it. What can we say? They're the boss! We have to follow them.

If you weren't a graphic artist/illustrator or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why? I want to be a Web Developer. It was my first dream job since highschool.

What legacy will you leave?
I think it's a bit early to be thinking about that right now, don't you think? Haha!

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
Aside from wanting to be a Creative Director or an Art Director, I hope someday that I would have a company of my own. Probably a design agency or a production house.

Your #1 art tip or words of wisdom.
Never stop doing what you love. Being an artist means making the world a better place. I mean, what would movies be like if it weren't for us? What would t.v. shows be like if it weren't for us? What would posters, billboards and magazines look like if it weren't for us? Some think that being an artist is a waste of time but then again, how would the world look like without us? There is a saying, "EARTH without ART is just EH." It's true, right?

Any final message? Its your time to shine..  We are artists! We are visionaries! This is how we contribute to the world. We make it better. We make it colorful. People will look down on us but if we stand up to what we believe in, no one can bring us down.
