SAPI (Possession) Anung kinakatakutan mo?

Sapi (Possession) yan ang unang titulo at unang horror film na ginawa ng isang batikang story teller direktor na si Brillante Mendoza.

Sinu ang sasapian at bakit sinapian? Ilan lang yan sa mga katagang iyong pasasabi pagkatapos mung mapanood ng horror-dokyu film na Sapi.

Anu nga ba ang kwento ng SAPI?

Its a story between the two rival station in the Philippines, the Philippine Broadcasting Channel (PBC) eating up audience share, Sarimanok Broadcasting Network (SBN) is desperate to find a way to toast its plunging rating. It hopes documenting an actual spirit possession could be the breakthrough.

The search for any incident of spiritual possession however becomes so elusive to Meryll Flores(Meryll Soriano),a TV Executive producer who is a trainee. Under intense pressure, she retorts to making a secret deal with BAron Valdez (Baron Geisler), a cameraman of the rival network PBC. She acquires from him footage of a possession and beats PBC to air it on SBN.

The supposed turning point in Meryll's career however spirals into an exorsing reality that mirrors the political system governing the TV Network.

And to know more deeply about this horror-dokyu film I ask Direk Brillante Mendoza about the Sapi.

What exactly the Sapi all about?

Direk Brillante say, "Sapi is basically a horror film about the paranormal phenomenon of the demonic possession. This paranormal occurrence has created widespread fear and curiosity. In this film, the characters running the media network personify apathy and ruthless, while those characters who committed theft and plagiarism thefify unscrupulous media practitioners. The parallelism of the two situations: a case of demonic possession and the callousness of the powerful and influential media exemplify which of them could be more terrifying and fearful.

In perspective, the film is presenting societal issues and crimes committed by those in power with immense and influence on people. The effect and ramifications are so devastating that people have become hardened and accustomed to that fear has become inconsequential. People are afraid and incline to believe that which has not seen, yet refuse to accept and believe things that they normally see that could be truly more horrifying and disturbing.

What is your treatment or approached on this story?

Direk Brillante say,"Sapi is treated like a documentary that captures the day-to-day activities of the characters. As the story unfolds, we dig deep into their personal lives and further into their psyches. The film thus feels like a documentary within a documentary, blurring the boundaries between fiction and news.

Sapi is a product of intensive research, crafted with the highest regard for social reality. The main actors immersed in the lives of their characters. There is hardly any script read on the set and we have a cast of non-actors.

The result is a movie that values authenticity. But since this also falls within a film genre (which is a great challenge for me as a filmmaker) like any horror movie, there is substantial dramaturgy and some elements of suspense, thrill and gore. This film, however, was consciously made to deer away from the classic moviemaking, such that the horror would hopefully continue and endure beyond the screening.

My Mini Review of the Movie | Spoiler Alert

Isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit napaOO ako sa pumunta at manood ng pelikulang ito dahil unang dahilan si Direk Brillante Mendoza ito, isa sa mga brillant story teller ng indepedent film, ikalawa horror film ito paborito ko ang genre at ikatatlo unang horror film niya, kaya naisip ko kung paano niya gagawin at kung paano naiiba ito sa mga horror film na nakita ko na sa loob at labas ng bansa.

Ibang-iba masasabi ko pude rin siyang gumawa ng horror film at di lamang yun maganda yung pagkakabit-kabit ng mga istorya.

Habang pinapanood ko ang palabas na ito ay may bigla akong naalala dahil parang nakita ko na ang ganitong set-up sa totoong buhay kung saan naglalaban sila sa isang video footage ng isang OFW (oopss spolier hahaha).

Isa sa mga nagustuhan ko dito ay yung cinematography niya, no doubt about dun dahil kilala naman natin si Direk pagdating dun sa bagay na yun, ngunit subalit may ilan sa mga eksena na medyo naguluhan ako marahil parte iyon ni Direk kung saan sinabi niya kanina kung sinu nga ba ang tunay na sinapian, ang isang multo o ang taong buhay.

Isa sa mga best part ng movie na ito ang ay kwento tungkol kay Merryl basta abangan ninyo dahil malaking gulat o pasabog ito para sa lahat.

Sa akting naman ni Dennis Trillio isang malaking boom di dahil magaling siyang artista kundi nadala niya ito ayun sa gusto ni direk at di lamang yun may mga eksenang di mo akalain na gagawin iyon ni Dennis.

Sa akting naman ni Baron, walang masasabi magaling talaga siya sa larangan na yun pero may mga eksenang parang kinakain niya yung mga salita lalo na pag dialect na ang ginagamit. (alam ko yun kasi tiga dun ako)

Over all bibigyan ko ng rating ito na 7 Star.
