You Turn : Antonio Rey Manuel Fernandez Ferrer
Antonio Ferrer as El Presidente Emilio Aguinaldo |

Tell me about yourself that people don't know:
I was planning to become a lawyer when I was kid. Great grandfather, grand father, father were all lawyers.
What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
Current state of mind, hirap naman nito. Happy at the same time eager to improve my skills as an artist.
When did you first know you wanted to become an stage actor?
I didn't plan on becoming a stage actor. In fact I was a conducting major at the University of the Philippines College of Music to help my skills as a choral conductor because at that time Im the assistant conductor of the kilyawan boys choir. Only when my first voice teacher told me that Im more suited sa voice department did I change my course.
What was the first show you ever did? And hows the experience?
My first theater show is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I played the role of Joseph and accidentally played the role of the narrator too because the show got extended and the artist, Sir Mark Carpio, wasnt availble anymore, I did his part. No rehearsals, show agad. My favorite role so far is Aguinaldo. Lol!!
What has been your favorite role so far?
My favorite role so far is Aguinaldo. Lol!!
Have you ever played someone of the opposite gender? (If not do you want to try it?) What was that like?
I haven't played someone of the opposite gender. It would be a great challenge if I do it.
Have you ever forgotten your lines, or a prop, or choreography during a performance? What happened?
Yes a lot if times i miss a line or two. Im bulol din because I speak fast normally. I think "being in the moment" is very important when acting onstage. I wish I had known this when I first started acting, it would help a lot in making the scene and acting natural and fresh.
Besides acting, what other training have you had (voice, dance, stage combat, etc.)?
Actually I've had voice training but never really trained formally in acting. I learn through watching other actors and listening to the director.
Have you ever forgotten your lines, or a prop, or choreography during a performance? What happened?
I memorize quickly because I'm very good in imitating. When I was a kid I use to imitate a lot of Disney movies memorizing them in the process. So I think because Im like that during my childhood its easier for me to memorize. Plus I was part of a choir for more than 10years and we had to memorize a lot of songs so that training helped too.
If you could choose, what three actors would you really want to work with?
Three actors James Earl Jones, Sir Ian Mckellen, Anthony Warlow.
Why do you think theater is important?
Theater is important because personally it gives me the opportunity to live out other lives. Like it gives me the chance to become a president, a soldier, a novelist etc. Also theater makes me more sensitive, having to absorb all the feelings of the characters you play helps you to be more sensitive in real life. It is also important because it makes me express myself more. When you are on the stage you should be vulnerable otherwise you will become defensive and the truth of the character won't come out. Vulnerability is important to me because if I'm not vulnerable then no learning will take place.
Why do you think so many aspiring actors end up giving up on their dream?
Money is one of the main problem in theater. There are a lot of talented artist out there but can't perform because theater is not financially rewarding. If a lot of people would support theater, if all the shows are full houses, if those rich politicians support the arts, then I think no one would think a second thought in becoming a theater artist!!
What is something embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on stage?
Nothing embarrassing yet. Just a lot of funny moments but they all went well.
What are some of the greatest fears you think actors/actress face?
Fears?? Maybe piyok and forget lines and Hmmmm I also get nervous every single time. It never goes away. I just need to focus on the scene and trust that things would be okay. "I've rehearsed this so it should work".
What do you need in order to become a successful actor?
To become successful I think you just have to work hard and be happy with what you are doing. Studying and broadening your skills continuously would help you in becoming a better performer and an artist. But for me the most important is that you are happy and having fun. If Im happy then that is success already.
What makes a good stage actor in your opinion?
Good stage actor - someone who moves you in a performance. Someone who is playing for truth rather than applause.
What is the most rewarding part of stage actor?
Rewarding part - that you were able to touch the audience. That they were able to empathize with you.

Pros and cons well as I said before theater helps me to become a better person on and off stage. It helps me to express my feelings.
Cons naman it's not financially rewarding.
What goal are you working towards within your career and when will you know you have reached it?
Goal - to be able to perform outside our country and represent the Philippines is a great goal! Also to be able to inspire a lot of young singers and theater actors to pursue their dreams as performers and artists. After shows being called by the young audience as their idol is very rewarding! It makes me feel that Kahit papaano I've kept their passion for the arts alive.
If you weren't a stage actor or an artist, what would you want to be?
If Im not a stage actor I would be a lawyer.
How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
20-30 years from now hopefully I'm happy with what I'm doing. But you know I don't look too far in the future especially in what Im doing which is music and theater. These two art forms are focused on the here and the now, like myself I tend to focus on the here and the now. As long as I'm doing good and I'm happy I'm okay. I just wish thay 20-30years from now Im still in the same state wherever that would be.
What legacy you will leave on?
Legacy - too early for legacy, I just want to enjoy my life and my craft. I think people with legacy didn't think of their own legacy. They just worked hard and imparted their talents and skills to the world. Thats my goal too, share my talent as long as I can.

I've learned a lot in theater. But the one thing that sums it up is "Being in the moment".
Enjoy the moment because once it's gone you can never bring it back. Yes think of the future but don't make it worry you too much. Whatever you do at the moment would shape your future so make sure that whatever you do now counts! YOLO SO ENJOY!!
