YouTurn : Robbie Bautista

Genre of your grapic illustration: Quirky Editorial?
Tell me something about yourself that people don't know:
Single since birth, gay. Hit me up! Charaught. I know how to play the violin! :)
What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
I'm okay. It's been a productive day so I'm doing this as a break.
When and how did you get your start in the industry?
I joined design contests when I was in college. Did some freelance work for friends and referrals, promoted myself online through my blog and a portfolio. Most of my clients contacted me because they saw my work online.
Did you go to school to study this genre?
Yep! Multimedia Arts. Did a lot of design-related things so I know a little about everything. But my focus now is more on illustration and character design.
How did you discover your passion for art? Was it always something you knew you wanted to do?
Well, I liked watching anime when I was a kid and wanted to try drawing that style but couldn't. I also wanted to become an architect before.
How do you define graphic design?
Creative solutions.
How did you find your style? Has it changed since you started?
Everyone starts by copying someone else, and then copying another, and another. Eventually, you'll mix bits and pieces of each style and figure out what works for you. So yeah, my current style is quite different from my earlier years, of course. A product of trial and error, experimentation, etc.
What was your first ever illustration of, do you still have it, if not where is it?
As in first ever? I did an amateur graphic novel when I was 10. I have no idea where it is now.
Here some of the art works of Robbie
pusong mamon
Fortress
One Leap Wander
A Crowd of Fruity Hipsters
We Crash Like Planes Do
Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?
My illustrations are a mix of personal experiences and random, spontaneous things.
How did illustration/graphic design change your life?
I think it has affected my choices in life. How I present myself as a brand to the public. Cause it helps to have an identity that people will remember, so I do my best to come up with a visual approach to everything. Does that make sense?
What are the pros and cons of being a graphic illustrator?
Pros: The ability to create something, daming chicks (pero hindi ko gusto nag chicks),
Cons: Daming nagpapadrawing. Daming gusto i-drawing but it's hard to find time for it.
If you weren't a graphic artist/illustrator or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
I would continue being a professional violinist. =)
Or a fashion designer doing menswear.
What legacy will you leave?
I don't know. I think it's too early in my career to think of such things.
How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
20 years from now I'll be behind the counter of my own guesthouse in Sagada, greeting guests and baking pies for them in my rustic cafe. I will also have a guesthouse in El Nido, Siquijor, and Chiang Mai. Of course, I'll still be doing art.
Your #1 art tip or words of wisdom.
Just keep doing what you love to do and do it well.
Any final message? Its your time to shine..
Keep moving forward! And wag masyadong emo… at wag puro selfie gawin sa buhay.
