Tara samahan ninyo akong kilalaning mabuti ang isa sa mga naging kaibigan ko mula sa mundo ng putograpiya.
Isa sa mga naging malapit kung sa kaibigan sa mundo ng putograpiya si Ian, kadalasan mas napag-uusapan namin ang mga paglalakbay niya sa iba't-ibang parte ng Filipinas kumpara sa putograpiya marahil siguro dahil parehas din kaming manlalakbay at kung nauubusan naman kami ng kwento balik putograpiya naman, kadalasan street photography ang focus niya, syempre kahit paano may mga alam din ako sa bagay na ito at kung wala naman madalas humihingi ako ng mga ilan sa mga pointers para dito. Sa ngaun isa siya sa mga connoisseur ng Powerhouse G5.

The thing that most people don’t know about me is that I am good looking…. Hahaha! I can’t really think of one… lol!
What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
Confused about staying or migrating
How did you get started in photography?
Always wanted to be in the field of visual arts specially when I was about to enter college but my parents didn’t want that direction for me. So after slaving my self in the corporate world for about nine years, I finally decided to buy my own camera and start getting serious with my real passion, that was two years ago.
Did you go to school to study photography?
I don’t know if they’ll be proud of me (LOL) but I did study at the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation in Intramuros.
What camera do you use?
I use a Nikon
How would you characterize the style of your photography?
I guess I try to capture real life as it happens. I like my photographs when it tells a story, when there is life when the person who looks at it feels like he/she is part of the story that is being told.

And what's the story behind it?
This is part of my yet another failed Project 365. He is one of the people working on a drainage system for our yard. I was suppose to take a picture of the nails on the fence but he was using it so I just took a photo of him instead.
Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?
Growing up I wasn't really particular on being a photographer. I actually wanted to work on films as a Cinematographer or Director. This came about when a film student from UP who was my sister’s classmate that I got to meet when I was in high school.
How did you become a photographer? And When did your career start as a
professional photographer?
Hmmm…. Professional….. hmmmm that is quite a heavy word that entails a lot of responsibility for me. But to answer the question I started in the photography business full time on 2011 when I resigned from my full time work in the BPO industry.
How did you go about selling your first photograph?
It was commissioned by a travel magazine and it really didn’t sink in to me that my photo was actually published until I saw it with my own two eyes.
What makes a good photographer in your opinion?
Somebody who can tell a story without any words.
Do You Have A Favorite Walk Around Lens...If So What Is It?
If asked what is my favorite lens that would be my 50mm lens but usually what I take as a walk around lens is my 18-105mm lens because of the flexibility it gives me specially at the narrow walkways of old Binondo.
Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you?
My Camera.
What is the most rewarding part of photography?
I guess the most rewarding part of photography is seeing beauty in things. It is like having a third eye, seeing a dimension that can’t be seen by ordinary eyes but the best part of it is that you can share what you see to the whole world.
What is your most embarrassing experience as a photographer?
So far wala pa naman – pero I get to be shy most of the time specially when I am working with veterans of the industry.
What tips can you give to someone aspiring to be a professional photographer?
Ang mundo ay parang Quiapo punong puno ng snatcher! Hahaha… but really first thing I’d have to give to an aspiring photographer is safety first, your life is not worth any story or equipment that you have. Second be a visionary, think of things that you’d think that you can only see in your dreams then find a way on how to translate them into visuals simply put it “from visions to visuals”.

What are the best tools for a beginner to learn on (besides the camera)?
using a diffuser, flash or any light source or light source modifier. I believe that Photography is all about understanding how light works so if you know the behavior of light some things are going to be easier for you to understand.
What is your favourite recent image you have shot recently? Can you describe it’s creation in regards to location, lighting, composition, camera settings etc, also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?

This was taken in Batad, Banaue in the province of Ifugao. We went around the schools on the different terraces in Banaue to reward the children for going to school while reminding them of helping to keep the rice terraces beautiful and intact.
This was taken with ambient lighting at around ten in the morning (not quite sure about that) I just wanted to fill the frame with as much image of the terraces as I can. What makes this photo work for me is the small bush of wild plants at the corner which act as some kind of frame along with the mountain tops.
I took this with a Samsung Corby 2 using the panorama setting so that I could capture more of the terraces.
You can just never go wrong with Batad there beauty in everywhere you look!
What are the pros and cons of being a photographer? Please be specific.
Pro: You can enjoy more of your time take as much load as you can and take a break from work whenever you need to.
Con: Unstable income. If you rely just on shooting alone and you are not frugal enough , you have got to prepare your self big time. So you need to study a lot and think of other channels where you could use your photography.
I know you like traveling for shoot or even for chill-out, can tell me where is the best place to be to do some shoot? and why there?
I believe that where ever you are is the best place to shoot. All you have to do is open your eyes and observe then tell the stories that you see. So I guess I don’t know but if you ask me where is my favorite location for a shoot? I would say Manila without skipping a heart beat. I love the Escolta, Binondo, Quiapo, Sta. Cruz and Lawton area. There so many things happening there and the buildings just takes you to another era.
What goal are you working towards within your photography and when will you know you have reached it?
To establish my own studio and be a recognized travel-portrait photographer.
What photographic organizations do you belong to?
None really aside from FPPF where I studied… I haven’t been really actively seeking membership to any photography club though I would love to be in one.
Name a photographer you would like to take a portrait of?

If you weren't a photographer or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
This is the most difficult question that you ever asked!
How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
Traveling around the world with my business working for me…. Hehehe….

This is really hard to answer because as of now I really haven’t decided what kind of photography I still want to focus on. I guess for now I’d like to be remembered as the Photographer who can tell beautiful stories in one photograph.

Shoot –experiment don’t be afraid to do new things irregardless of what the outcome would be, you’ll never know if you don’t try.
