You Turn : Jerald Napoles

Tell me about yourself that people don't know:
-I used to be a chubby kid and dancing is my first love.

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
-Pretty chill and excited.

When did you first know you wanted to become an stage actor?
- When i started getting appreciated by the audience and directors

What was the first show you ever did? And hows the experience?
- Jesus Christ Superstar, started as a chorus dancer, I enjoy performing since i was a kid.

What has been your favorite role so far?
- Favorite role were Tolits for Rak Of Aegis and Kayla for CareDivas

Have you ever played someone of the opposite gender? (If not do you want to try it?) What was that like?
-Yes I did a transgender caregiver in Israel role for the musical CareDivas, it was difficult during the process of characterization but fun during performances. An actor always love challenging roles.

What show/shows are you currently working on?
-Im currently part of GMA soap opera My Faithful Husband and Sunday Pinasaya

Have you ever forgotten your lines, or a prop, or choreography during a performance? What happened?
- Yes ofcourse, I have forgotten a few lines and did some adlibs on the spot since i have a concrete idea of the story and my character, Yes i forgot some props onstage, an example is when I was doing the role Tolits, I have to exit the stage discreetly so i can get the cellphone that i use as a prop to video the character Aileen in one scene. When I do mistakes during dance routines. I continue as if I didn't make a mistake. Hehe when in doubt, project!

What is something that you know now that you wish you knew when you were first starting out as an actor?
-I wish i did more training. Most of my actong skills were developed hands on while performing haha.

Besides acting, what other training have you had (voice, dance, stage combat, etc.)?
-I started as a dancer so choreos for musicals is kind of easier for me to learn, my singing was developed from videoke sessions. Haha.

How do they memorize a lot of lines?
- Reading the script over and over again helps you learn the natural flow of conversations on the script. It also helps you discover the character more, then you will notice you talking and reacting accordingly as the character which helps you memorize the script better.

If you could choose, what three actors would you really want to work with?
- I wanna work with Johnny Depp, Ben Whishaw, and Meryl Streep.

Why do you think theater is important?
-As an actor, Theater is important,. It's where you develop discipline, skills, techniques and the passion in acting. It's addictive for for actors specially the first-timers, Each performances is a one time big time success or failure. The moment you get onstage, there's no backing out, no directors will shout "cut!" Of you forget the lines. No editors to edit your scenes, in short, its all up to you, whether you like it or not, the director's job is finished when the show begins, your job is to act and deliver a good performance. That is why you are an "actor".

Why do you think so many aspiring actors end up giving up on their dream?
-Well I can't blame them, we are all individuals, we all have our own responsibilities and issues in our lives. If an actor decides on quitting, it's his/her choice. He/she have his/her own reasons. I can only speak for myself, I have fought hard times, i almost quit too, i almost starved myself too.  But it was all worth it. Because i love it. I don't quit from what I love.

What is something embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on stage?
-Embarrassing? I don't remember any. Mistakes are part of it. But im not embarrassed, it's part of the process, just don't make it a habit.

What are some of the greatest fears you think actors/actress face?
-Most actors fear expectations both personally or from other parties.

What do you need in order to become a successful actor?
-To be successful, you need the guts and courage along the way, acting is fun, but the road to your goals is not easy and will never be.

What makes a good stage actor in your opinion?
-A good actor in general is an actor who never stops learning. Acting is a continuous process of developing your craft.. as you age, you get roles you've never done.

What is the most rewarding part of stage actor?
Touching people's lives.

What are the pros and cons of being a actor? Please be specific.
-The only Cons for being an actor is when most of the time we tend to mix our lives with work. According to Al Pacino "actors are emotional athletes". We portray life and deal with human emotions every time. Some of them we are not even familiar with... then we tend to carry over these emotions built by our characters in our own real lives.

What goal are you working towards within your career and when will you know you have reached it?
-Basically, I want more acting jobs, it's my life already. More challenging roles. Maybe win another acting awards?this time for Tv or Film.. Who knows.. hehe.. maybe here or abroad... I will know if I've reached it when i set another goal in my career. Hehe.

If you weren't a stage actor or an artist, what would you want to be? Why?
-I do not know.. right now i only wanna be an actor/performer. I can't imagine myself in the office. Hehe.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to do what you do?
-DREAM BELIEVE SURVIVE. I may sound funny, but these words are true and goes side by side with each other. Dream, Believe you will have it, Survive the process. It's not bad to dream big, just act on it!. I read something from "The alchemist" which says "It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting".

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
-20-30 yrs. From now, i will still be acting.

What legacy you will leave on?
-I don't know what legacy i'll leave on, it's still in the oven. Haha. But becoming an inspiration to someone will be a good one.
