Tell me something about yourself that people don't know:
I count my steps sometimes when I’m walking. I also take note how many seconds it takes for me to reach the top of the escalator.
What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
Feeling tired. I just went for a walk with my dog.
When and how did you get your start in the industry?
I got my start when I had this class about using Illustrator during my second year in college. I got a low grade for something I did, and it drove me to do better. Then I started sharing my work online and some people commissioned me to do their t-shirts and logos. I’m glad that they still keep coming.
Did you go to school to study this genre?
No. I think sites like Google, YouTube, Pinterest, Behance, Creativebloq, and Designspiration, to name a few, do a good job in providing lessons to get someone started on anything nowadays. You just need to have the drive to learn. I still am learning, and will continue to do so.
How did you discover your passion for art?
It was during my college years when I developed an interest to pursue something that was related to art. I always liked looking at packaging, t-shirts, comics, magazines, tattoos, album art from the record stores, stickers, drawings on walls, things like that. I always wondered if I could make those things. I mean, I liked drawing ever since I was little, but I never imagined doing it for a living.
Was it always something you knew you wanted to do?
Yes.
How do you define graphic design?
Making an ugly tarpaulin look awesome.
How did you find your style? Has it changed since you started?
I can’t pinpoint a certain event on how I found a style, but I was always interested in looking at antique furniture, stained glass windows, old church gates, flowers, filigrees found on picture frames, books, or jewelry and tried to draw them using pen and paper. Then I found out that Illustrator could help me achieve the look I’m aiming for.
I think it's evolving. Right now, I’m trying to step out of my comfort zone. Trying to draw new things, which are pop-inspired.
What was your first ever illustration of? Do you still have it, if not,where is it?
I think it's an illustration of Dragon Ball Z and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sadly, I wasn't able to save them. We moved houses a few times in the past, and I lost them.
Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?
Everywhere! There’s tons of websites out there, and I think I already mentioned a few. But yeah, inspiration is everywhere.
How did illustration/graphic design change your life?
It gave me the ability to buy things I need and want, provided me an outlet to express myself, and made me question my existence. Hahaha!
What are the pros and cons of being a graphic illustrator?
Doing freelance graphic design and illustration gives me the freedom to work from home or wherever I choose to. I also get to work on whatever time I want. Not having to commute and deal with the rush hour. I get to walk my dog and be with my family.
The cons are… you have to find a way to do more work. There are times when you have no income at all! But I’m happy.
If you weren't a graphic artist/illustrator or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
A Genius. Billionaire. Playboy. Philanthropist. Because, Tony Stark!
What legacy will you leave?
That all the ugly tarpaulins are to be eliminated.
How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
Really old. I wish to run my own business during that time and travel wherever.
