Tell me something about yourself, your background and your profession?   I’m just an ordinary dude with extraordinary interests.  I got into acupuncture because of those extraordinary interests, and became a full blooded devotee of Chinese Medicine when it successfully helped me with my migraines.  Currently I am on a mission and my goal is to have Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture as a PRC licensed profession here in the Philippines someday.

Tell me about yourself that people don't know?  If I was not a medical professional, I would have wanted to be a sportscaster.

How do you start as a Acupuncturist?   It depends on the country.  Here in the Philippines you have to either finish required courses here or abroad and have your credentials certified  by the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC), a government owned and controlled corporation.  However, it’s not legally binding and there is no licensure here yet, hence my goal.

In my case I took some World Health Organization approved courses for those who are already medical doctors in China.

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture, in the narrow sense, refers to the insertion and manipulation of needles into the body, usually at set locations known popularly as “points”.  In the broad sense, it refers to a collection of procedures related to needling. The word itself comes from the latinacus meaning “needle” and pungere meaning “to puncture” and it involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles. These needles are then manipulated by hand or by electrical stimulation. Needles can be placed on sites of local pain or on pre-defined acupuncture points that lie on pathways of Qi known as “meridians” or “channels”.
(from my blog)

What is the benefits?
The main benefit of acupuncture for me is that it is non-pharmacologic.  What that means is that it doesn’t involve drugs.  Hence it is very good for those already taking a lot of medicines and who need to cut down on that number – for example patients with kidney failure.  Also it is very good for those who are already on medicine but the medicine is not having full effect.  For example, in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia but the carbamazepine is not relieving the pain totally.
How does western medicine view acupuncture?   I will answer this question by saying that the WHO endorses acupuncture.  It is unfortunate that some other physicians refuse to consider the evidence that acupuncture works.

What is the difference between Chinese and Japanese acupuncture?   There are actually several styles of acupuncture.  Japanese acupuncturists tend to use meridian style acupuncture as opposed to five elements or TCM style being taught in China now.

Is There Anything I Need To Do Before or After Receiving An Acupuncture or Acupressure Treatment?
Personally, I would say bring any lab results and x-rays or CT-scans or MRIs that you have.  Also, don’t be hungry or too full, and please wear loose clothing.  Also after the treatment don’t get yourself cold  - so no washing with cold or eating or drinking anything cold for 2-4 hours afterwards.

How many sessions do I need for treatment How many needles should be used in each treatment
A general rule is the longer the disease is there, the more treatments needed.

How often should I have acupuncture treatment – in China they have treatments every day.  In western countries usually once or twice a week

In which cases, acupuncture is inadvisable.  Skin infections hehe

Can children receive acupuncture?  Yes!An informal rule is that a child must be able to accept instruction to keep still.  Children can be treated and have had good success with acupuncture.

Can I Combine Acupuncture and Western Medicine?   They do that all the time in China!

Does medical insurance cover acupuncture treatment .  That would depend on the insurance company hah

What is Moxibustion? Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years; in fact, the actual Chinese character for acupuncture, translated literally, means "acupuncture-moxibustion." The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain general health.

Any final mesage? Its your time to shine..
