You Turn : John Paul Basco

Tell me about yourself that people don't know:  I graduated with a course of BS Medical Technology and I’m already a licensed Medical Technologist.

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview? Happy with a cute smile on my face, haha

When did you first know you wanted to become an stage actor? I was a high school student then my parents were invited to watch LAM-ANG THE MUSICAL by the Tanghalang Ateneo so it was my first time to watch a play then after watching, it really do inspire me ,then I’m exposed to watching play from Atlantis Production, Repertory Philippines and Trumpets which is all musical, so I realized I want to be on that stage, performing , to showcase what ever talent I have and I also want to inspire other people while I’m performing because that’s what I have felt while I was watching people performed in front of me.

What was the first show you ever did? And hows the experience?  Orosman at Zafira , the experience was so intense, it was a production where you really need to do things with all your blood and sweat, you have to offer yourself, the best that you can give, it has taught me to always push into your limits, and never give up on certain things, it was really a challenging production for me, I have learned a lot from it.

What has been your favorite role so far? I have never had a lead role ,but  I’m proud to say that I’m always been an Ensemble. As an ensemble there still this one role that I will never forget and this will be as Andrew Garcia (which I named myself for me to build a story as a character) in Maxie the Musicale

Maxie the musicale
Have you ever played someone of the opposite gender? (If not do you want to try it?) What was that like? Yeah, it was in Maxie the Musicale as Ms. Croatia of the Beaucon scene, at first I doubted myself if I can really do it but I trusted myself and my director, so as we rehearse Im starting to love Ms. Croatia and I always told myself every Beaucon scene that every moment Im going to enter that stage people will gaze and look at me, and if it will ever happen again for me to have a chance to play an opposite gender, I will gladly take it because challenges are the best way for you to learn new things and by learning new things you grow and develop yourself.

What show/shows are you currently working on? I’m currently rehearsing for Dulaang UP’s Ang Nawalang Kapatid, I still can’t tell what my role is for I still need to survive the rehearsal period.

Dulaang UP
Have you ever forgotten your lines, or a prop, or choreography during a performance? What happened? Fortunately, I have never ever forgotten anything because Im trained with discipline and a will to focus, Thanks to Sir Dexter Santos

What is something that you know now that you wish you knew when you were first starting out as an actor? The steps in developing a certain character and how to build it with some objectives.
Besides acting, what other training have you had (voice, dance, stage combat, etc.)? I really don’t have a proper training in any fields related to theater, but I’m trained as a pianist for 4 years

How do they memorize a lot of lines? Always read the script again and again, then for me, feel the essence of your character so it will be more exciting to memorize a lot of lines.

Heartbeat
If you could choose, what three actors would you really want to work with? Lea Salonga, Roeder Camañag and Felix Rivera

Why do you think theater is important? Theater can be influential to some people’s lives, it is where you can flourish your creativity, develop yourself and there you are free to express yourself and what I love the most is that it brings people together.

Why do you think so many aspiring actors end up giving up on their dream? They doubted and never tried, I used to be like this I doubted myself a lot that’s why I always end up giving up. But what I’ve learned is you really have to believe cause if you do everything will be possible.

What is something embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on stage? Luckily, none

What are some of the greatest fears you think actors/actress face? I guess if they were not able to give justice to the character they need to portray.

What do you need in order to become a successful actor? DISCIPLINE

What makes a good stage actor in your opinion? A good stage actor for me, is someone who knows how to give his best and receive from his fellow actors to develop a good relationship on the stage.

What is the most rewarding part of stage actor? When you gave your 100% performance and the audience will be inspired in what you did.

What goal are you working towards within your career and when will you know you have reached it? My only goal as a performer is always perform to inspire other people , I will know when I reached it when I’m already the one sharing my ideas about all the things I have learned to other people who dreams to be an actor. What organizations do you belong to?None, but I consider Dulaang UP as my family now

If you weren't a stage actor or an artist, what would you want to be? Why? A Surgeon for during my pre med years I seem to have interest on it and also a Entrepreneur.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to do what you do? Always keep believing in yourself, Never ever give up your dreams for dreams really do come true and once you had your dream never be selfish, always remember to share what you have and the most important thing is PERFORM TO INSPIRE

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now? Hopefully a person with a successful career

What legacy you will leave on?  A legacy that will always remind every people who dreams to never give up.

Any final message?  Never give up your dreams. Always believe, Im always be here to remind you guys to keep on fighting and keep reaching your dreams.

Thanks to John Paul Basco for this awesome and informative interview, hope to see you again at the theater soon!
