Jason Chester Veloso isa sa mga hinahangan ko pagdating sa glamour shoot dahil sa galing niya sa pagkuha at pagconceptualize ng mga idea sa isang lugar.
May isang nagtanung sa akin kung bakit mas dumadami ngayon ang mga photographer sa bansa? Sagot ko simple lang dahil mahilig ang mga Pinoy sa pagkuha ng larawan kahit sabihin natin na simple lang ang kukuhaan nila ngunit kung bibigyan mo ito ng pansin ay makukuha mo ang gusto nitong ipahiwatig. Parang ganyan si Chester kahit nakapasimple lang ng lugar pero once na nakunan ka niya at tiyak may kwento ang bawat kuha.

Kaya naman naisipan ko na bigyan siya ng espayo sa aking munting blog para mas madami pa siyang maipahagi kaalaman sa mundo ng fotographiya.

Tell me about yourself that people don't know:
I'm Jason Chester C. Veloso and currently a Senior Graphic Designer for several I.T. companies. I'm 23. Though an accomplished Graphic Designer, my heart is really into Photography. I was a frustrated painter before because I didn't have the patience to wait the arduous process of finishing my work. But In the advent of Digital technology especially in Photography, I can now produce more well thought images than sketching it manually. I always see to it that every work that I do has a "Painter's Touch", that everything is well thought from lighting techniques to posing. As the late Edward Steichen said "Every other artist begins with a blank canvas, a piece of paper the photographer begins with the finished product."
What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
I’m quite happy.

How did you get started in photography?
It is in my photography class back in 2009 that I started to learn about photography.
Did you go to school to study photography? what camera did you use?
I attended workshops but not as a student but as a staff in Federation of Philippine Photographers Inc. in Intramuros back in 2011. My first camera was Canon 500D.
How would you characterize the style of your photography?
Most of my photography are conceptual in nature. I compose like a painter and shoot like a photographer and breaking the rules here and there.

Can you share with us some recent images?
One of my recent images is for the catalog of Ysra’s Summer Collection.
And what's the story behind it?
We want to create the fun, youthful summer vibe in the images for her clothing collection..
Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?
My colleagues at FPPF. When I’m just starting out, they solidified my knowledge in photography.
How did you become a photographer? And When did your career start as a professional photographer?
I started my gig in 2011 by creating a canvas version 24x36 inch of the portrait of our client in Makati.

How did you go about selling your first photograph?
We priced the canvas of our client based on the current professional price at that time.
What makes a good photographer in your opinion?
There are various styles in photography but what makes a good photograph for me is being at the level of other photographers around the world. Because there is a standard being followed in every style of photography. You can’t just break the rules without following certain aesthetic principles and art theory behind it.

Do You Have A Favorite Walk Around Lens...If So What Is It?
The Tamron 17 - 50mm vc lens.
Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you?
My vision. It’s the heart and soul of photography together with technical knowledge.
What is the most rewarding part of photography?
It feels so good when people get inspired by looking at my images.
What is your most embarrassing experience as a photographer?
When I had a client back in 2012 and I forgot to bring my camera’s battery.
How photography change your life?
It changed my life in a way that I’m always sensitive in looking at my surroundings.
I know you been working with some of the famous and influential people in the country but may I ask whom do you wish/dream to work with and Why?
BJ Pascual. He’s one of the few photographers that I personally like that is at an international level of capturing images in fashion.

What tips can you give to someone aspiring to be a professional photographer?
You have to know your WHY. That’s your purpose.
What are the best tools for a beginner to learn on (besides the camera)?
Read some books in art history/theory and about photographers/painter’s life. Many of the best photographers were Visual Artist. They had a keen understanding in compositions and aesthetics even before they started to shoot a camera.
What is your favourite recent image you have shot recently? Can you describe it’s creation in regards to location, lighting, composition, camera settings etc, also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?
My latest shot accepted at Vogue Italia. The location was referred to us by Greg. It’s an old house in Quiapo Manila. It’s simple, straight-on-camera with few minor post-processing. You’ll know the image is good when you can’t stop looking at it.
What are the pros and cons of being a photographer? Please be specific.
The pros are the people you get to know and the relationships formed. The downside are the cost in upgrading and maintaining the equipment.

I know you like traveling for shoot or even for chill-out, can tell me where is the best place to be to do some shoot? and why there?
I personally like some place that resembles the light of the window whether its morning or afternoon the light from it is always soft.
What goal are you working towards within your photography and when will you know you have reached it?
When one of my work is published at a reputable magazine or billboard of a brand here or abroad. Though in my Graphic Design career I already achieved this.
What photographic organizations do you belong to?
Philippine Photographic Society, Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation.
Name a photographer you would like to take a portrait of?

If you weren't a photographer or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
I would want to be an art director in a design or advertising agency.
How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
To be one of the forefront of photography industry especially in fashion and glamour styles.
What legacy you will leave on?
The people I shared my knowledge with, the people my images inspired and my satisfied clients.

I see 3 years after this interview that I can look back to this and say “Damn, It’s been a long and rocky ride but it’s worth it.”
