Intramuros to become an 'artist haven'

In a move to attract more local and foreign tourists, the Intramuros Administration (IA) is pushing for the "Walled City" to become an 'artist haven.' Through the support of the National Commission of Culture and Arts (NCCA), the IA is finding means to encourage aspiring and professional artist to utilize its outdoor and indoor venues to help proliferate and support Philippines Art and Culture.

Jose Capistrano,Jr., IA Administrator, said they wanted artists to have a hand in informing the next generation of Intramuros' rich history, which the "Walled City" is widely known for locally and internationally.

As such, IA is currently in the ropes of staging a three-day arts festival dubbed as "the 1st Intramuros Arts Festival" which will commence on November 16-18 at the Maestranza Wall along the Pasig River in Intramuros,Manila. The said venue is a portion of the old Intramuros Wall which has been recently reconstructed through the assistance of the Japanase government.

Capistrano is inviting the public, particularly artist,hobbyist,painting collectors and visual arts student from various colleges and universities in Metro Manila, to come and take part in the said event.

The 1st Intramuros Arts Fest shall be implemented hand-in-hand with the Intramuros Visual Artists of the Philippines (IVAP). The said organization has been known to stage monthly art exhibits at the Visitors' Center of the Fort Santiago, and is now looking at the event as their culminating activity to mark the end of 2012. At least 150 visual artist from all over the country are expected to participate in the Arts Fest, which will be spearheaded by the renowned artists Nemiranda, Rey Pacheco, Al Perez, Badz Magsumbol and Pancho Piano, among others.

Capistrano sees the event as a means to support the IA's major project in partnership with Gawad Kalinga,known as "Kalinga Intramuros". The endeavor aims to help the government in preserving and restoring the country's heritage sites.

"One of our main goal here is to make Intramuros a 21st heritage learning center,a 'museum of the street'," Capistrano said.

Aprt from the said exhibit displays, Capistrano announced that there will also be an "art tiangge" wherein paintings of some prominents artist will be sold at very reasonable prices for as low as Php 10,000.
