Calle Escolta

Ayun sa kasaysayan ang pangalang Escolta ay nagmula sa spanish word na "escortar" na ang ibig sabihin ay escort.

Isa ang Escolta ang tinuturing sentro ng negosyo noon at dito rin unang nagkaroon ng isang shopping center bago ang pre-WWII period.

Noong 1920's ang lugar ng Escolta ay teritoryo ng mga European Businessman and ang mga European lamang na gamit ang maaring ibenta sa lugar na ito, samantala ang mga Pilipino at Chinese Mestizos ay pude lamang magbenta sa paligid nito katulad sa lugar ng Rosario at Nueve sa Binondo.

Sa may Escolta din matatagpuan ang ilan sa mga pinakaunang branches ng mga iyan sa mga sikat na tindahan ngaun, katulad na lamang ng National Bookstore na itinayo noong 1930's, ang Savory . At dito rin nagsimula ang unang DZBB radio station na matatagpuan sa Calvo Building.

|The Regina Building was once the headquarters of insurance companies--for example, Provident Insurance, now the Spanish-owned Mapfre Asia.  Now the building appears on a set of Filipino heritage stamps.

        According to skycrapercity.com in an article by Honesto General that former Senator Vicente Madrigal used to rent a room here for his staff. Provident Insurance Corporation - one of the first Filipino-owned insurance companies (now is Spanish-owned Mapfre Insular Insurance) -opened here in 1934. Many other insurance companies made this their headquarters when this area was still the main financial district of Manila. It now houses several freight forwarding companies.

At ilan sa mga landmarks ng Escolta ay ang sikat na Crystal Arcade, the Masonic Temple kung saan unang itinatyo ang Philippine National Bank, ang Cosmopolitan Building kung saan unang itinayo ang Manila Times.

**Escolata was marked by  beauty and splendor. The high-end  fashionable shops and department stores were located here. It was reputed as the place for shopping of the rich.

Escolta, Manila, once had the informal name "Queen of the Streets".
